Web Design

What is a website?

A website is a collection of documents that are stored on the Internet that form a single system in which information can be given on a specific topic or business.

How is a website stored on the Internet?

A website is saved on a "Web Server" which is a large super compter and is available to be accessed by the general public useing their computers. Saving a website to a web server is like saving a document to your computer - it is organised into 'folders' and each folder has a specific address, like a postal address, which is the website name. For example, Google is stored on a large web server in America and we can see and use Google just by typing in www.google.com into our web browser.

Why have a website? How will a website help my business?

A website can be a good way to advertise and promote your business or services, as it can be accessed by anyone who has access to the Internet. A lot of people now look on the Internet first when trying to find out information about a specific topic or when trying to find a business in their area.
When thinking of a website to be used for a business, think of it as a way of having an online brochure advertising your products or services. It can be a way of selling your products or booking your services, as well as being a way for potential new clients to contact you.

Who will look at a website? How often will people visit the website?

The people who look at your website will be people trying to find information on a specific topic, service or product. If your website is updated regularly, they may come back frequently. If your website doesn't change much, they might not come back as frequently. The key to a good website that is viewed frequently is a good design layout and content that is updated frequently, ideally once a month.

How many pages will I need?

For each website, you will need a home page, a contact page and a page explaining your services as a minimum. After that it depends on the nature of your business. If you are just providing services, then it is suggested that each service has its own page dedicated to explaining that service. If you are selling products as well as services, then you may need a page with different categories of products, then a page with all products in those categories, and then a page for each specific product. It all soon adds up.

What information will you need from me?

If you are an existing business, you will probably have some form of brochure and current advertising. This can be used as a starting point for your website. If you have specific services or products that may require extra definition to that on your current literature, then these extra definitions will also need to be provided at the starting point.
